SAYWARD RESPONSE TO GOVERNOR'S DEFICIT REDUCTION PLAN:
“I fear that Governor Paterson’s Deficit Reduction Plan will shortchange upstate communities and local governments at the expense of downstate interests. His plan for a $480 million school aid reduction, based on “fiscal capacity, student need and residential tax effort” will undoubtedly spare New York City and urban schools while leaving smaller North Country schools in the red.
We could have addressed these issues in March and April and yet again in September when the governor said he would call us back to session. Meanwhile, local governments are struggling and instead of accepting responsibility for our situation, state leaders shift the burden onto local governments.
Every week we hear of the creation of a new lucrative position for corrupt officials. Where are the funds for all of these high-paying political appointees coming from? Millions are being cut from programs like children’s health care and community college development while new jobs are created to satisfy fat-cat bureaucrats. Priorities are misplaced, to say the least.”
