SAYWARD HOSTS CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM FORUM
Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward (R,I – Willsboro), member of the Assembly Committee on Corrections, today joined her Assembly Republican colleagues in hosting a forum to discuss ways to improve efficiency and safety in New York’s correctional system while preventing closures. Attendees involved in the correctional system provided testimony for Sayward and her colleagues.
“Prison is meant as a system of punishment, but also for rehabilitating prisoners to allow them to become productive members of society upon release,” said Sayward. “Cutting staff and creating a system of overcrowded facilities will not only create a more dangerous environment for correctional officers, but it will severely impact the ability of our correctional officers to continue their rehabilitation efforts. Forums such as these are a great tool to more fully understand the situation facing us and to provide potential solutions.”
