SAYWARD'S CIRCUIT BREAKER PROPERTY TAX RELIEF GAINING STEAM
“Governor Paterson’s most recent plan to address New York’s soaring budget deficit contains a proposal to create a circuit breaker property tax relief program similar to the bill I have introduced in the Assembly. Property taxes remain at the top of my list, and I am happy to see that the idea has gained some ground. I would have hoped the spending cap was more inclusive so all taxing jurisdictions would be bound to the cap. This proposal coupled with mandate relief could be the formula needed to get a handle on spending.
While the Governor’s proposal is a step in the right direction, it is not enough. We as legislators are obligated during this upcoming special session to finally enact some real change for the people of New York. That must include a cap on spending and the creation of a system to bring about property tax relief.”
